TikTok Shop US Medical Claims: A Pre-Publish Checklist for Sellers

Health-related wording can create listing risk even when a seller is trying to describe an ordinary product benefit. For TikTok Shop US, review the product type, the outcome the wording promises, and whether the claim is supported by permitted labeling.

In brief

  • For non-OTC products, do not say or imply that a product can diagnose, treat, cure, mitigate, or prevent a disease or medical condition.
  • For OTC medicines, medical claims must stay fully consistent with the Drug Facts label, including Uses.
  • Review the whole listing: title, description, images, packaging, labels, and product qualification.

Why product type matters

This distinction changes what kind of health-related wording may be used.

For a non-OTC product, do not describe or imply that the product can diagnose, treat, cure, mitigate, or prevent a disease or medical condition. For an OTC medicine, compare every medical claim in the listing with the product’s Drug Facts label, especially the Uses section.

Does this listing promise a medical outcome that is not explicitly supported by the product’s permitted labeling?

If the answer may be yes, the wording needs further review before publication.

Explicit and implied medical claims

Risk is not limited to formal medical terminology. A statement can still imply diagnosis, treatment, cure, mitigation, or prevention even when it avoids those exact words.

Phrases that deserve review include patterns such as:

  • “treats [medical condition]”
  • “cures [disease or condition]”
  • “prevents [disease or condition]”
  • “relieves [medical condition]”
  • language that otherwise presents the product as producing a medical outcome

Listing examples to review

Wording to reviewWhy it needs reviewSafer direction
“treats [medical condition]”It presents the product as producing a medical outcome.Use wording that does not say or imply that outcome; send it for further review.
“Lose X pounds in Y days”It is a quantified, time-bound weight-management promise.Remove the transformation promise and send the listing for further review before publishing.
A use not stated in Drug FactsIt may extend beyond the product’s explicit packaging statements.Compare the claim with the Drug Facts Uses section before publishing.

Wellness and weight-management wording

Simply adding a disclaimer does not automatically make a prohibited wellness claim acceptable. TikTok Shop US guidance also prohibits claims that a product will prevent or cure a physical, mental, or emotional wellness condition, including when those claims are accompanied by disclaimers.

TikTok Shop US guidance prohibits high-risk weight-management statements, including high-risk weight-loss or muscle-gain claims. Examples identified in the policy include quantified or timeline promises and before-and-after body-comparison imagery tied to a product.

  • “Lose X pounds in Y days”
  • guaranteed or unusually rapid muscle-gain promises
  • product-linked before-and-after body comparisons
  • other quantified or time-bound transformation claims

Rewording alone may not resolve the issue if the underlying outcome claim remains the same.

Practical pre-publish checklist

TikTok Shop’s Product Listing Policy requires product titles, descriptions, images, packaging, and labels to set realistic expectations and meet standards for truthfulness, accuracy, and safety.

Listing elementQuestion to ask
Product typeIs this an OTC medicine, a non-OTC product, or a restricted product?
Medical outcomeDoes the wording imply diagnosis, treatment, cure, mitigation, or prevention?
OTC labelingIs every medical claim fully consistent with the Drug Facts Uses section?
Wellness wordingDoes the copy promise to prevent or cure a physical, mental, or emotional condition?
Weight claimsDoes it use numbers, deadlines, guaranteed transformations, or before-and-after comparisons?
Listing consistencyDo the title, description, images, packaging, and labels make consistent and realistic claims?
QualificationDoes the product require category, product, or invite-only approval or documentation?

Clean wording does not replace category or product qualification. TikTok Shop US states that restricted products may require category-level, product-level, or invite-only qualification before listing. The platform may also request additional documentation during review or after a product is live.

What CheckThenList can review

CheckThenList can help sellers review submitted listing text and structured fields before publication by surfacing supported policy-risk signals, highlighting matching phrases, explaining why a signal may matter, linking to relevant official policy sources, and providing a safer rewrite direction.

What still requires manual review

CheckThenList currently reviews the text and structured fields you submit. Claims that appear only in images, on-image text, or visible packaging still require manual review unless that text is included in the submission.

It is a pre-publish review aid, not a platform approval system. CheckThenList does not determine whether a product is legally compliant, guarantee that a listing will be approved, replace required product qualifications, or make the final enforcement decision.
