Amazon product description guidelines: examples and a pre-publish checklist
A useful Amazon product description tells a shopper what they will receive, what the product is for, and which details matter before buying. Start with facts you can verify, then check that your wording matches the product. Follow the current requirements for your category and marketplace; there is no single description formula that makes every product eligible for sale.

Description, title and bullet points have different jobs
The title identifies the item. Bullet points make important attributes easy to scan. The description connects those details into a useful explanation of the product and its intended use. Amazon separates these fields from offer information such as price, condition and fulfillment.
Keep the same model, material, quantity and dimensions across the title, bullets, description and images. Check the current category guidance for formatting and length rather than copying a character limit from an unrelated product. This guide does not prescribe one universal limit.
Gather the facts before writing benefits
Prepare a short fact sheet: the exact item, material, dimensions and units, package quantity, included accessories, intended use, and relevant care instructions. Compare it with the actual product, packaging and reliable product records. Leave an unknown detail unresolved rather than filling it with a plausible guess.
A benefit still needs a factual basis. A container can have a stated capacity; that alone does not establish that it is leakproof, food-safe, or suitable for every temperature. Certification, safety, compatibility and performance statements need support appropriate to the claim.
Check the promise, not just individual words
Read each sentence as a buyer would. Does it promise a guaranteed result, imply disease treatment, or describe an attribute you have not established? Review the complete claim and the applicable product policy. Adding a disclaimer or replacing a strong verb with a softer one does not establish eligibility or substantiate the claim.
Use relevant search terms naturally, where they help identify the product. Repeating keywords is not a substitute for useful information. Amazon's writing guidance recommends informative descriptions and warns against keyword stuffing; a risk check is not a search-ranking service.
Review the final version, including AI edits
Compare the final copy with your fact sheet after every rewrite. AI-generated wording can introduce a benefit or attribute that was never supplied. Amazon's AI listing guidance keeps responsibility for accurate, complete and compliant content with the seller. Keep only statements you can support.
Work through an example
These are illustrative examples, not saved check results or successful appeals.
Replace vague detail with verified specifics
Large storage pouch with plenty of room.
Review: A buyer cannot tell the size or how many pouches are included.
Next step: If your records confirm one 20 × 12 cm pouch, say: ‘One storage pouch, 20 × 12 cm.’ Do not use these example measurements for a different product.
Do not soften an unsupported medical promise
This cream cures eczema.
Review: This is a treatment claim, not simply a product description. Product eligibility and the applicable claims policy need review.
Next step: Do not replace it with ‘supports eczema relief’ and assume it is acceptable. Remove the unsupported promise while you verify what claims, if any, are permitted. Describe only established product facts.
Resolve a package mismatch
Set of three cotton towels. Package includes two towels.
Review: The description contradicts itself. Editing style cannot determine the true quantity or material.
Next step: Check the actual package and supplier record, then make every field agree. If the verified package contains two cotton towels, describe that consistently; otherwise do not make that assertion.
